Trail safety is of upmost importance to the B&O Trail Association (BOTA) and to the Brownsburg Parks Department.
The trails are for everyone and all trail users need to do their part to keep trails safe. BOTA collaborates with the Brownsburg Parks Department to maintain the entire length of the B&O Trail. Brownsburg's guidelines for trail safety are posted on the trail and the details are highlighted below:
- Trails are open dawn to dusk. Carry a flashlight if using the trails near these hours.
- Use the buddy system. Children 11 years old and younger are suggested to visit with an adult. Preteens and teens should always be with a buddy.
- If you choose to visit alone, make sure someone knows where you are going and when you expect to return home.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Carry a cell phone with the location feature turned on. This will make it easier for emergency personnel to find you if there is an accident.
- Wear proper safety equipment when bicycling. Wear a helmet, reflectors and bright, visible clothing.
- Lock your parked car and keep valuables out of sight.
- Look both ways when entering the trail and crossing streets! Stop at all intersections and remember: motorists have the right of way.
- The “HAWK” beacon signal on Green Street (by McCammons) is a traffic control device used to stop traffic and allow trail users to cross the street safely. Use it by pushing the button.
- No motorized vehicles are allowed on the trail. Only motorized wheelchairs, maintenance and rescue vehicles are allowed. Report any unauthorized motor vehicles immediately to 911.
- Keep right. If passing another trail user, pass on the left and announce your intention before passing.
- Yield right of way. In-line skaters, joggers and bicyclists yield to pedestrians; in-line skaters, joggers, bicyclists and pedestrians yield to horses.
- Maintain a safe speed. Be aware of other users around you and maintain a safe distance.
- Stay on the trail. Make a mental note of your location each time you pass a trail mile marker (located every 0.2 miles).
- Do not disturb the trail’s native trees, plants and wildflowers.
- Don’t litter. Remember: Pack in, pack out.
- Pets must be on short leashes. Clean up after your pet!
- Report Suspicious Activity by dialing 317-852-1100.
