Most people know the B&O as the Baltimore & Ohio trail.
However, in September 2016, we INFORMALLY knew it as the Bulldog & Oriole trail! The B&O Trail Association presented a special railroad themed gift of a locomotive bell to the communities of Brownsburg and Avon. This was done in collaboration with the Rotary Clubs of Brownsburg and Avon. The theme for this project was "Competition. Collaboration. Community." which fit in well with the Rotary Club's motto of: "Service Above Self." The inaugural fall battle ended in a tie between the two schools. In the event of a tie, the two schools decided to share possession of the bell taking it for two months each until the winter sports season is wrapped up.
At the varsity level, Brownsburg and Avon will face each other in girls golf, boys and girls cross-country, boys tennis, boys and girls soccer, girls volleyball and lastly boys football in the fall. Since the new B&O Rotary Bell is an ALL-sports trophy, each varsity match-up between Brownsburg and Avon plays a role in determining who gets possession. Details of the ALL-sports trophy and the awarding of possession were worked out by the two respective Athletic Directors from Brownsburg and Avon.
This turned out to be a fun, one-of-a-kind way for the B&O Trail Association to express appreciation for everything that both communities have done to help us construct the trail thus far. After all, it seems appropriate that the Bulldogs and the Orioles are helping to build the B&O! In the spring of 2017, look for the two Rotary Clubs along with the two INTERACT Clubs from both Brownsburg and Avon high schools to collaborate on a service project along the B&O Trail. It is community service efforts such as this which will demonstrate the spirit of the new B&O Rotary Bell and its theme of "Competition. Collaboration. Community."
